If you are holding the handle too tightly, you are doing it wrong. You need not hold the handle tightly. Just make sure you keep hold the handle tightly enough to maintain a proper grip and not lose it while you row. The problem with holding the handle to hard is that it can tire your hands. Your arm will and it can also cause burns on your palm and fingers.
Pay attention to your legs
A thing you should know about rowing is that it is mainly about your legs. You may not know this but your legs usually have more strength than your arm and thus they should be taking care of most of the work you’re doing. Do not over strain your arms.
